What is an Interactive Read Aloud?

To begin, let's establish a clear definition of Interactive Read-Aloud:

➡️ Interactive read-aloud is a teaching technique in which the teacher reads a text aloud while engaging students in interactive discussions and activities. The teacher uses expression, tone, and gestures to bring the story to life and capture the students' attention.

➡️ This helps to promote comprehension, critical thinking, and active engagement with the text among students and sets the stage for meaningful discussions.

1️⃣ Empower Students to Become Active Readers:

➡️ Interactive Read-Aloud builds a community of readers, expands knowledge, oral language, vocabulary, and skills to become fluent readers, and creates a foundation of mentor texts for reading and writing mini-lessons. Gather them and enjoy a high-quality text. Bring the characters to life and let them explore all aspects of the characters, emotions, challenges, and experiences. Reflect and share with them, and let them learn through connections.

2️⃣ Whole-group Instruction:

➡️ Choose an Appropriate Text: Select a book or text that is age-appropriate, interesting, culturally relevant, rigorous, and aligned with the lesson's instructional goals and learning objectives.

➡️ Consider your English Language Learners (ELLs): Modify your lesson according to their ELL Students' needs. As a teacher, consider what kind of innovative ideas you can spark. What level of familiarity do learners possess regarding the topic, and how does it relate to their lives? Allow your students to see themselves in the text. Let them learn that they are not alone and many people around the globe experience the same feelings and challenges.

3️⃣ Select Text with Purpose:

➡️ Set the Purpose: Before starting the read-aloud, clearly state the objective and purpose of the activity to the students. It could be to explore specific themes, characters, plot points, vocabulary, or any other learning objective you want to focus on. Students will be prepared to think critically and meet the standards. Students need to know what they are learning and what we expect them to do.

4️⃣ Stop to Invite Thinking & Discussion:

➡️ Get students to talk: Encourage students to participate actively. Teachers must stop to encourage thinking and discussion at certain points during Reading, have conversations with the students, and encourage reflection. It is essential to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no, make predictions, and prompt their thoughts and reactions to the story.

➡️ Model: Share your thinking process with your students by using think-aloud. This will help students understand how skilled readers approach the text, make inferences, and draw conclusions. The best way to implement and teach think-aloud is during guided reading. Gather, model, and guide them until they are ready to implement it independently.
