It is an instructional strategy that involves a careful and detailed study of a passage or text, comprehension of the text structure, and understanding its meaning beyond what is presented in front of the student.

Close Reading teaches students to connect beyond the text, and annotation is an activity that enhances their critical thinking.
Model annotating a close reading text and see the magic happening. Students will uncover all the reading skills.

Teach them to become detectives using the clues provided by highlighting and marking the text, using headings and subheadings to identify the main idea and topic of the text.

Choose Compelling Texts. Select challenging and interesting texts that align with the standards and your students' interests. Give the students to choose between different texts.
Become Text Detectives: Model the Close Reading Process: Demonstrate how to analyze a text and think aloud your thought process. Annotation is an example of becoming a detective and using the information to understand the passage.
Focus on Vocabulary and Word Choice: Encourage students to use context to comprehend challenging words and understand the text.
Ask Deep Questions: Encourage students to ask and answer questions that explore the text in more detail. Pair them with partners to work together and discuss the text. This is a perfect activity for learning from each other.
Encourage Multiple Readings: At least 3 times. Each Reading uncovers new layers of meaning and understanding. The first read could be done together, the second with a partner, and the third independently. I like to follow these steps when reading it because it will prepare them to comprehend it when they read independently.
Create a Collaborative Environment: Encourage group discussions to provide a learning opportunity to share their thinking and understanding. My studenst sit in an open circle, and we start asking and sharing what we learned from the text. You will be surprised with their thinking and understanding.
Collect the Data: Assess students' participation and thinking during class discussions, which can help you assess their understanding and engagement with the texts.
