Celebrate Diversity and acceptance by exposing students to the world of windows and mirrors with The Gift of Ramadan by Rabiah York Lumbard.
This book is very close to my heart. As the month of Ramadan will be over in less than two weeks, this book allows me to share with my students the reason for my long days of fasting.
In the story, Sophia wants to fast for Ramadan this year. So she tries to keep busy throughout the day so she will only think about food. But she breaks her fast early when the smell of cookies is too much.
What I love the most about this book is that it will be a mirror for my Muslim students and a new window for my non-Muslim students to explore different customers, cultures, and experiences.
Use this book to EMPOWER Diversity:
* Teach them to be who they are without fearing being judged.
* Teach them that culture is a unique characteristic.
* Teach them that we are special the way we are.
* Teach them that happiness is inside them.
* Teach them that they have many talents; they need to find them within them and their traits and unique characteristics.
* Teach them they are in charge of their own experiences and actions.
* Teach them to be proud and share their heritage and culture.
